On Thursday, May 24, we made it to Jerusalem. This was a highlight of our trip, where we were able to visit the Old City of Jerusalem, the Wailing Wall (Western Wall), marketplaces, and remains from the early first century. The Western Wall was ripe with anticipation, celebration, and noise, as the city was open for Bar Mitzvahs on this particular Thursday. We were able to see the remains of an ancient rich man’s house, dating up to 70 AD, and showing signs of destruction by fire—most likely from the Roman destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD. The day was eventful and it was quite a sight for everyone on the trip to visit the largely rebuilt Old City of Jerusalem.
