Eye in the Sky

by Skip Heitzig |
The Hubble Space Telescope is the first telescope set up outside the earth's atmosphere. When it was launched in 1990 it couldn't be focused, and it wasn't until astronauts worked on it in 1993 that it began giving us a view of the universe. Since that time, several shuttle missions have extended the working life of Hubble, replacing or upgrading its components. Because of this, experts say Hubble is now 100 times more powerful than it was when it first began working.

Hubble has photographed the first planet around another star, and it has enabled scientists to estimate the size of the universe. A team of astronauts from shuttle Atlantis is upgrading it this week, to enable Hubble to study "dark energy," a force that astronomers believe is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate.

All this is pretty exciting stuff, until you shift your focus away from this little "eye in the sky" to the infinite One who created the stars and the planets that it watches. Our God knows what's out there, and how long it's been there, and how big it all is. He's intimately familiar with outer space, because He made it. Psalm 147:4-5 says, "He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite."

God is the ultimate knower. He knows more astronomy that any astronomer, more biology than any biologist. And He knows more about theology than the most astute theologian.

Hebrews 4:13 says, "And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." How do you deal with that kind of God? How do you relate to Him? Well, I'll tell you bluntly. Don't try to pull the wool over His eyes! You can't hide anything from Him, so don't try to con Him! Be really honest, because He knows you anyway.

There are 6.7 billion people living right now on our earth. God is aware of every one of their movements, all their activities, the time they get up, the time they lay down to rest. And He's interested in each one.

His vision is never cloudy. He sees the farthest star, and He sees the smallest one of us. And He cares about them all. So how do you deal with Him? You give Him your love, and your worship, and your devotion. He is worthy of it all.

"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33)

In His strong love,
