SERIES: 20/20: Seeing Truth Clearly
MESSAGE: The Atonement: His Death, Our Life
SPEAKER: Skip Heitzig
SCRIPTURE: John 12:20-33

MESSAGE SUMMARY
Wasn’t there any other way for God to save human beings than by sending His Son to die? The very idea of a bloody crucifixion sounds brutal and barbarous to some, yet it is the centerpiece of our faith. What is the big deal about the atonement? Why the cross? Why had it been the plan of God through the ages? Today we examine the death of Christ for us and, in His own words, His own estimation of its necessity and consequence.

Wasn't there any other way for God to save human beings than by sending His Son to die? The very idea of a bloody crucifixion sounds brutal and barbarous to some, yet it is the centerpiece of our faith. What is the big deal about the atonement? Why the cross? Why had it been the plan of God through the ages? In this teaching, Pastor Skip examines the death of Christ for us and, in Jesus' own words, His own estimation of its necessity and consequence.

  1. His Death Was a Priority (vv. 24-26)
  2. His Death Came with Agony (v. 27a)
  3. His Death Accentuated Glory (vv. 23, 27b-28)
  4. His Death Brought Victory (vv. 29-33)

Connect Up: The fact that Jesus went through such intense suffering on the cross means He can relate to our suffering firsthand. He knows and understands the sorrow and heartbreak we experience as human beings. Read Hebrews 4:14-16. What do these verses mean for your personal relationship with God?

Connect In: Jesus saw His whole life and death as a means to glorify God. Put another way, He lived and died to glorify God. Why do you live and to what end will you die? What is the purpose for your existence? How are you using your talents and spiritual gifts to further God's kingdom, both inside and outside the church?

Connect Out: First Corinthians 1:18 tells us that "the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing" (see also 2 Corinthians 4:3-4). In light of that, how are we to share the message of the cross with unbelievers? Read John 16:7-11 and discuss the role the Holy Spirit plays in our interactions with people who don't yet believe.
