SERIES: Hunting Giants
MESSAGE: The Giant of Overwhelming Odds
SPEAKER: Skip Heitzig
SCRIPTURE: Judges 7:1-15

MESSAGE SUMMARY
By now you have discovered that we who are Christians are surrounded! There seems to always be more who are against us than who are for us. We face the reality (and we feel it, too!) that we are living in enemy territory. That doesn’t give us permission to be adversarial or combative, for we’ll attract more flies with honey than with vinegar (see 2 Timothy 2:24-25). But Christians are either overcome by their unbelief or they are overcomers because of their faith. How do we navigate through life when the odds are stacked against us and circumstances seem overwhelming?

Main Point
By now you have discovered that we who are Christians are surrounded! There seems to always be more who are against us than who are for us. We face the reality (and we feel it, too!) that we are living in enemy territory. That doesn’t give us permission to be adversarial or combative, for we’ll attract more flies with honey than with vinegar (see 2 Timothy 2:24-25). But Christians are either overcome by their unbelief or they are overcomers because of their faith. How do we navigate through life when the odds are stacked against us and circumstances seem overwhelming?

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” —Romans 8:37

Talk about It

  1. Share a story when overwhelming odds were against you. How did you respond? What was the outcome?
  2. How are we to calculate in times of overwhelming circumstances? What reorients you for battle, readjusts your compass, reaffirms purpose?
  3. How does your fear affect those around you? “One timid soldier can do more damage than many enemies.” How does your faith affect those around you?
  4. What kind of faith is needed when odds are stacked against you?
“Hunting giants is a progressive skill; you learn to do it gradually.” —Pastor Skip

Make It PracticalPray
Father, thank You for the story of Gideon, a man with fear who became a man of faith. You are patiently walking us through our journey of faith so that we can become men and women who are strong in the faith. Help us to surround ourselves with people of faith, not content to listen to the voices of fear, but spreading the contagion of faith in the lives of other people. When we are faced with uncertainties, help us to pause, worship You, and reorient ourselves to You. We trust in the sovereign arms of an everlasting God. In His name, amen.
