What Makes Revival Ripe?
Jonah 3:1-4
Skip Heitzig

Jonah 3 (NKJV™)
1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you."
3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent.
4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day's walk. Then he cried out and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!"

32 Jonah - The God Who Won't Let Go - 1998

Churches and Christian organizations have used the word "revival" typically to designate a series of meetings conveniently scheduled into the church calendar. Someone may announce, "We will have a revival beginning Sunday and lasting throughout the week!" But real revival is when God moves in the lives of His people, quite apart from any man-made schedule. Let's notice some things that make real revival work.

Did you ever feel like you have gone too far or that God could never forgive you? This eight message series on Jonah is a refreshing reminder of the relentless love and grace that God showers upon His children, even when they don't go His way.

  3. A Message (vv. 3-4)

Questions for Discussion:
  1. Do you remember the last time real revival took place in your own personal life? How and when did it come?

  2. It seems conditions are always ripe for a spiritual harvest that the need is always present. After reading Matt. 9:36-37, answer this question: How sensitive are you to the darkness and corruption of your own culture?

  3. How have you personally grown by the teaching of the Word of God? (Hearing what God tells rather than what a person feels or thinks.)

Devotions out at Sea
Jonah 2

Message Summary
When someone speaks impetuously, we say that it was a "gut reaction". This prayer of the reluctant prophet Jonah was also a "gut reaction," although in this case Jonah was reacting to the whale's gut rather than his own! Finally this guy is talking to God. He's learned a few things. We can learn a few things too.

Repentance is one of those words that conjure up medieval images. But though there is certainly a serious side to it, the outcome of repentance is anything but somber. Let's see what real repentance looks like when it pervades an entire culture.

God's Angry Young Man
Jonah 4:1-4

Message Summary
Who in the world could get mad at God for His love, forgiveness and mercy? Answer - Jonah could. In fact he got mad enough to almost take his pulpit and go home! This is a warning to anyone thinking that just exposure to God and His Word is sufficient. Today we'll examine this problem that many of God's people seem to have.

Did You Forget Something?
Jonah 4:5-11
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Memory is one of the keys that unlocks the future - unless we remember the past, we have no reference for making the right choices tomorrow. There is so much that we learn when we come to know God and yet, because of our tendency to forget, we may need to be reminded of something we have learned in the past. In the last verses of this book, God's prophet needs to be reminded of some key truths - so do we.
