The Jewish scribes had such great reverence for God's Word that it was of the utmost importance to preserve the Scriptures accurately. They took great measures—memorizing 4,000 laws before they could begin to write—to ensure it would be copied, pronounced, and interpreted precisely. Josh McDowell presents to us one of the rarest scrolls in the world, called the Lodz Torah Scroll, showing us that God will always provide the means for His sacred Word to be available to His church.

Calvary Albuquerque is regularly host to special guest speakers. This series includes messages from many great Bible teachers including; Pancho Juarez, Mike Finizio, Don McClure, Bill Welch and others. These messages can be purchased as CDs from our online store, or by calling 1-800-922-1888.

Introduction: Welcome to Calvary Albuquerque. We pursue the God who is passionately pursuing a lost world; we do this with one another, through worship, by the Word, to the world.

Skip Heitzig: Hello, Calvary family. Although I'm sorry I can't be with you today, I'm glad to introduce to you our guest speaker Josh McDowell; someone who has impacted my life for years. Since 1961 Josh has delivered more than twenty-six thousand talks to over twenty-five million people around the world. He and his team have created many cutting-edge events to help young people stand strong and firm in their faith.

Josh is also the coauthor of, get this, 138 books, including More Than a Carpenter, Evidence That Demands a Verdict, and now, New Evidence That Demands a Verdict, a work that has been key in shaping evangelical thought. I was also privileged to have Josh and his family in a church that I pastored for a couple years in Southern California. So, please give a warm welcome to Josh McDowell.

Josh McDowell: Good morning. Well, with a morning like this we ought to meet outside, that's for sure. Well, this morning I only got thirty-five minutes and I'm boiling over with what to share, so I'm gonna not tell you how what a privilege it is to be here with you and everything. I'm going to skip all of that and go right into what God has laid in my heart. What you're going to experience this morning, except for last night and the first service, has never ever happened in a church in two thousand years.

What you have before you here, nobody's ever had the gall to lay something this valuable, this rare, out before a church audience or any audience. What you're seeing here before you, and you can touch afterward, is one of the rarest scrolls in the world, probably one of the top five. It's called the Lodz Scroll. I named it the Lodz Scroll. I've owned it for three months, and only had it in my possession for three weeks because I had to have it reconditioned, the strings tightened in order to protect even more.

It is the Torah. What's the Torah? The Torah is what is referred to as the law of Moses. What is the law of Moses? The first five books of the Bible from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers—and you have to understand this thing is seventy-two feet long, one-third of it is not even unrolled—and then Numbers and Deuteronomy.

You have here a scroll that has survived since a thousand—since 1450 AD, almost seven hundred years. The reason it survived is that it came from a very poor community on the German-Polish border. And they were so poor he could not afford a new scroll. Normally a scroll like that would have been destroyed, and then they would have purchased a new one, and had a new one created, but they didn't have the money to do it. As result it makes it one of the rarest scrolls in history. It's preserved things through the medieval times, the Black Death, the Holocaust, everything, that has almost never been preserved.

Most people have never seen a scroll. They have never touched a scroll. You can come up and touch—I was thrilled just to touch it, but please do not touch the writing. Normally you shouldn't even touch the scroll, but, hey, it's Calvary Chapel. Do not touch because you have oil on your skin, and I didn't bring the things to wipe the oil off to be able to touch it, because the oil will deteriorate it, the printing. So, you can touch the borders, but please do not touch it, no food, drink, and, please, no small children.

No small children, because I was watching before and some, and they were picking it and pulling it over there, the samples of parchment, and they'd do the same things with the scrolls, and that could damage it. And, so, I'm asking no small children there, especially if it's the father, because the father doesn't pay attention to the kids. [laughter] Well, they don't! The mother does. You never trust kids around their dad. He's off to woolly-woolly land somewhere.

Now, what you're going to see today is the reverence for God's Word by a group of people that God created called Jewish scribes to preserve his words for three thousand years accurately. They wanted to make sure they had accuracy of copying it, accuracy of pronouncing it, and accuracy of interpreting it. No other literature of history, including the New Testament had such an emphasis on accuracy.

Now, there's in this scroll here there's thirty-six calfskins. Many scrolls took up to eighty calfskins to do it. It took them weeks, months, just to prepare the skins to do this. And the scroll is dated about 1450 AD by five different experts.

To do a scroll you had to be a certified scribe. Now, this is just part of being certified: you had to memorize and know four thousand laws or principles and copy the manuscript—four thousand. In this scroll right here if it was totally unraveled is the application of four thousand laws to guarantee the accuracy of what they've done. No one in history, even the Qur'an, or anything came even close to that as they did with the Old Testament and with the Torah.

Every skin had to be—and down there we have calfskin and we have sheepskin most people have never seen, it's called parchment. It was writing material and everything before papyrus. And you could touch it, everything, down there. And what is interesting, the dark skin is sheep and the light skin is calf. You'd think it would be the other way around. And the sheep skin has a heavier texture; you can feel that. But it had to come from a perfect cow, unblemished, a kosher cow.

The strings that you can see tie it all together came from the muscles of the legs of a perfect calf that they tied. And I had them all tightened. They undid it and retightened them to make sure as I unraveled it like this it wouldn't tear the scroll in any way. They would use in preparing the skin, they would soak it in plain water; sea water first. And then when they would sprinkle barley over the water.

And then they would soak it in gallnuts. We have some gallnuts down there. Most people have never seen a gallnut or even know what they are. They came off trees; the wasp create them, and many medicines come out of gallnuts. They're very expensive. I paid over twenty dollars each for those little, tiny gallnuts. So, please don't take one as a souvenir. Please don't.

But they would make gallnut. They will boil it—not boil it, they would keep—they'd never boil it because it would destroy certain aspects of it—in hot water for six hours and then they would soak the calfskin in it. And then they would string it up, and then they would scrape the hair right off of it. And they would soak it in limewater, which would help to remove the hair. And then they would sand the entire thing. And then often if it was quite dark, and you can see one of the ones over there, they would chalk it so it would be very white, so the letters would stand out distinct.

And then when you did a skin they often had holes that would develop in it, like right here. This is a calfskin and has a hole in it. And they would often create this hole when they would stretch the skin because that was a weak area of the parchment. So, then before they ever started writing, and you can see the patches through there, they would patch it. And they would do the patches with glue made out of animal fat. And think of it, some of them last seven hundred years and still in perfect condition. And, so, you can see patches throughout the scroll.

Then after this they felt that the more perfect the grid that everything was written—you won't be able to believe this was written by hand. It took over one year to do it. There's over 304,000 letters. Some letters took five to ten minutes to make one letter. That's why it took over years, hours, every day for a year, except for the Sabbath.

And they had to have a perfect grid, so what they did you can see it over there. You can't see it in most of it, because they would fold these under so they would have four layers of skin, and then they would sew it; so, you can't see it. But at the beginning—I have magnifying glasses there—and the thing on this says "pinholes." You can see it, not with the human eye, you need a magnifying—they have little pinholes that goes down the scrolls with each end of every skin.

Then they would do it from side to side at every column. There's a hole where the line would begin and the line would end. And what would they do? They put little pins in there, and then between the lines they would place a little tiny thread and they would tie it. And then they would take a dull knife and trace the knife down that to create a perfect grid. And they can see the lines, the grid all the way through the text.

Because they believed the more perfect the writing was and orderly, the less chance of misreading it, miscopying it, or misinterpreting it, and you know, it's true. If you just took it and written it out by hand, you know, it'd go up a little bit, down, it could be very easy to miscopy it, everything. But it's perfect. But then you look at it and three came up, one crawled up to the room up there and said, "Well, tell Josh he placed the scroll upside down." No, no, that's a Gentile—unlearned Gentile's opinion. No Jew would say that.

But if you walk up and look at it, you'd say "Oh, my gosh, they unrolled it upside down. Why?" Because when we would make a line, we would write the letter on top of the line. And going underneath the line would be, like, the P or the G. They didn't do it that way; they hung the letters from—go to that. Go to the next one. They hung the letters from the line. And then the Lamed and others would extend above the line.

So when you look at it, you say, "Well, it's upside down." No, that's a Gentile opinion. The Jewish person would know. "No, it's right-side up." They would hang it. But they wanted it to end exactly on a line, begin exactly on a line, and written exactly hung from the line. Why? And it's true—less chance of miscopying it, because they were so committed to accuracy or misreading it.

Then the quills, the writing material was made from the feathers. They always tried to choose a goose or a turkey. Why? The quill's a little firmer and so you didn't have to sharpen them as much. Now, you can imagine, not one letter is supposed to touch in seventy-two feet, and yet they were done with a quill, and made so close together with just a little bit of an error. And if the letters touched it was considered an error and had to be erased and corrected. And that's why they would use the goose or the turkey feather.

When they prepared the ink, they did it out of the gallnuts. They would crush them up. They'd put it in a fabric sack and hammer them until they were all broken up. Then they would take out all the shell, and then they would put it in hot water for six hours, add some different elements to it and everything. But they'd only do a little bit of ink at a time. Why? They found out when they just did a little bit of ink, when the ink was fresh, when you wrote it lasted longer, it was more durable. If they made a whole bunch of it, and it sat for days and everything before they wrote, it would fade much faster.

Now, you can see throughout here, especially right at the column just before the end of scroll, a lot of the letters are kind of orange; they have faded. Now, normally what would happen with a scroll like this when it would fade like that, or corrections done, or got torn, a little bit damaged, they would not use it any longer in the synagogue. Because they not only didn't want to miscopy the scroll, they didn't want to misread it.

And, so, they would take the scroll like this and use it in their Sunday school, the synagogue schools. And then when it was too worn to do there or too faded, they would put it in a wooden cupboard, or a place called the genizah. And when that was full, they'd take the scrolls out and bury them. That's why you don't have a lot of old scrolls. But this one here was done by such a poor community, they couldn't afford a new scroll, and so what they did was reink it.

And as you go through here you can see places that are darker, many of these were where they reinked the scrolls. And if they still had this, when they migrated after World War II to Israel, the community had to sell this just to survive for food. What it must have meant to them to sell this scroll.

And it came down through three hands before I finally was able to discover it and purchase it. Thank God the guy didn't know what he had. [laughter] No, I got it about one-twentieth its value. And, so, you'll see the dark and the light, and that's because they hadn't reinked that yet. Now, normally they'd never reink it. They'd destroy the scroll and create a new one, but they didn't have the money to do it. As a result, this scroll preserves things that no other scroll, hardly any other scroll, maybe four others in history even preserves. That's why it's so rare, but it was because it was a poor community and they didn't destroy it.

Then in Matthew 5:18 is something that few Christians understand. It says this, Jesus said, "For assuredly, I say to you, til heaven and earth pass away, one jot, one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." Now, Jesus is saying, "I'm going to preserve my word so much so that even a jot and a tittle will remain after three thousand years."

How many of you know here, could stand up and explain what a jot is? One person, two. How many of you know what a tittle is? Three. Folks when you leave here, the rest of your life you're going to know what a jot and tittle is. In fact, right there I found a jot and a tittle together. It's right there on the eighteenth column, right together a jot and a tittle.

Now, a jot is the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, it looks look a heavy apostrophe, like a heavy apostrophe up in the top left. The tittle was done for adorning letters that were important, are little hairlike to come up out of the letter, that project out of the top of the letter. You can see them right there. I hope you can see them. They're right over here. All through the text you have them. I've got magnifying glasses there, you can look at them. But they're little tittles; see how they go up there.

When they would put five together and they'd make bigger and then smaller, and they'd put little ordinations on top of it, that's called a crown or a tag. And like the first letter of the Torah is done extra heavy and a little large and it has a crown, it has five tittles or little curlicues on them on the top. Why? Because they wanted you to know: pause and pray, you are now beginning to read God's law, God's Word.

They held this in such sacredness, they even showed it by how they even started to write. And they put tittles on it to adorn it. They would often do that with the name for God, Elohim, they would put tittles on it, Yahweh and also for Moses and Abraham. Not all the time; once in a while if it was a very important passage, they would do an ordination of tittles on top.

And Jesus said, "Not one jot or one of those little, tiny, fine tittles will disappear until everything was fulfilled in the Word of God." And tell you what, this scroll proves they have not disappeared. You can still go all the way back and they're there. And this proves for twenty-five hundred years, and now it's three thousand years later, we still have the scroll, it has the tittles and every jot and every tittle. Incredible what they did to preserve the Word of God.

Now, they could not touch the text. Put up the slide 317. They used pointers; now, this is not an authentic pointer. But they would use pointers because they believed the text was so sacred—that's one reason I asked you not to touch the text—that the human hand would defile it. And so they used pointers. And in the synagogues, like we would our Bible, we take our finger, you know, and trace along. They would never do that. They would take a pointer and their eyes would follow the pointer because they so held the text in such sacredness and reverence. And then neither letter could touch each other.

Now, think of this. Over 304,000 letters—now I'm sure there's one or two that touches, and they hadn't corrected yet, but every letter was not to touch, and, yet, they did it with an old, ancient quill where the ink could run like a river or something else. And if it did, they had to erase it because it was an error.

And then, you see the long lines in there? Within the text you have this all along here, you can see it, what that was they not only wanted you to copy it exactly, they not only wanted you to pronounce it exactly, they wanted you to interpret and appreciate it with accuracy. So, these lines mean: slow down, this is very important what is said here about God.

Now, we have this in our English Bibles, many of them in the Psalms. In the beginning of the psalm it will say Selah, S-E-L-A-H, which means in Hebrew "pause and meditate about this, it's very important." That's what those lines said. Pause and meditate upon them. And every line had to be done exactly over three thousand years, by every scribe, they that had to be professionally trained and memorize four thousand laws to do that to every letter.

Then when it came for the name for God like Yahweh, or Elohim, Adonai, they would put the pen down, the quill, they'd ceremonially—they'd wash their hands, pick up a separate quill with a special ink, and they'd write the consonants for the name for God. Then they'd put that down, pick up the other. If they were writing the name for God and a king walked into the room, they could not look up and acknowledge his presence until they totally finished writing the name for God; that's how sacred it was to them and committed to accuracy. No one ever did that with the Qur'an, with the classics, with anything, let alone Harry Potter; but they did it with the scrolls in the Old Testament.

When they came to the name Yahweh—how many of you could stand up and explain what a tetragrammaton is? You'll all know it after this. Tetra, tetra—four; grammaton—grammar. Tetragrammaton: four—grammar. It's a reference to Exodus 3:14-15. Where it says, "Whom can we say sent us? Nobody's gonna believe this." And it says, "What is your name?" And God said, "I am"—Yahweh. That's the sacred name for God over 6,200 times in the Old Testament, about 1,000 times in the Torah.

This name for God is held in such reverence, a Jew even to this day will not pronounce it. Even though it says it, they will not say Yahweh. Why? They believe their lips are so unclean, defiled, that even for the breath to pass between their lips to say Yahweh would defile it. So what did they do? Often they would draw a line, and when they would quote it in the synagogue, they would pause. Everybody knew it was Yahweh. Then sometimes they just put two or three of the consonants, not all four. Tetra, they wouldn't put all four of Yahweh. Y-H-W-H it would look like to you in English. But in the synagogue they would pause and everybody knew it was Yahweh.

Then the Jews were dispensed throughout all the world. And after a number of years they started to lose the capacity to pronounce the Hebrew. Because see, all those were just solid lines of just consonants. No breaks for words, just solid consonants like the New Testament what Greek was written in. You say, "That's crazy, how could they read it?" They could read that as fast as and as well as accurate as you could read all the words broken up in English. Why? They were trained to do that when they read it.

But the Jews were losing their ability to pronounce it. So, what they did, the Masoretic scribes came along, and they divided up into words, and they added vowels to it to help the Jews that were dispensed throughout the world to even pronounce it accurately. Not just copy it, not just interpret it, but even to pronounce it accurately. That's called a tetragrammaton. And, so, in the synagogues they put in the vowels for the name Adonai, another name for God.

So, you had the consonants of Yahweh, the vowels of Adonai, and put together meant nothing except to the Jew. So, in the synagogue, and they chanted it, they would say, "Adonai." Everybody knew it was "Yahweh." Then the Greek translation came along, the Septuagint, and so they used the word kurios or Dominus meaning Lord. That's how we get "Lord" in the New Testament. It actually many times should be Yahweh, but it's appropriate saying Lord.

And then what happened was after they added the vowels, it kind of became lost what they had done and so along came some of the English translators and others and they said, "What is this word for God? It makes no sense." So, they: "Yahweh, Adonai, YHWH, Adonai," and they came out with Jehovah. That's how we got the name for God, Jehovah, it's a mistake. I can tell the Jehovah's Witness even your name is wrong. [laughter] And so, that's how we got Jehovah, which is the mixture of the consonants one name for God and the vowels in another. But they were so careful, they wanted to preserve the name for God. So, that's how we got Jehovah. That's the tetragrammaton.

Now, to preserve it they would divide the books up with four—you have one right there, it's Genesis going into Exodus. Ending of Genesis, beginning of Exodus, and down there is Leviticus. They would do four blank lines, meant one book just ended, the next one begins. Now, in order for something very important, it depicts something about God, his faithfulness, his power, something else, they did something extra in the scrolls. They would extend letters that would look like this.

This is the Song of the Sea, about the Red Sea. Go to it please, number 320. Well, you can't—see there, that's the Song of the Sea. And that was done that way for emphasis, meaning: stop, this is very important to understand about who Yahweh, Adonai, Jehovah is. Oh, my gosh, they not only wanted you to accurately copy it, accurately interpret it, accurately pronounce it, they wanted you to accurately appreciate God Yahweh.

Then once they finished the scroll, the entire scroll had to be checked letter by letter by letter; took months to do it by three different scribes. To make sure every single letter is correct from a cert—they had to use a certified scroll to even copy, and then they'd go back and check seventy-two feet of that, over 304,000 letters.

Then you'll often see dots on top of some letters. I have some highlighted here. You see on the left there, in the red circle? There's some dots going along the top, then on the right you can see five dots. What those dots meant was: one, be very careful in reading this; second, it meant there could be a textual problem here. But even if they thought there might be a textual problem, they could not copy it differently. They still had to do it exactly because they were committed to the exactness.

And often the textual problem was our understanding of that passage. So, they were so careful in accuracy they put dots above the words, say there could be a textual problem here, or pay close attention to how you interpret this.

Then they had rolling Pehs. A Peh, P-E-H actually, is a letter. But often they would make the letter a little larger—and I have them, you can see them all there here—make the letter a little larger and they would do a little curlicue in it. Why? They did that before the medieval times. That one way you take this manuscript before the medieval times. It's because after that they didn't do that. They didn't think it was necessary, the more modern scribes.

But they did this and made the letter a little larger called a rolling Peh, because they rolled the end of it up, is to say: this is very important, this letter, this word right here, meditate on it. Wow! And everyone has to be exactly in three thousand years on the scroll.

And then in Elohim, you could see where they would add tittles to it. Hello, right there. You see the little tittles going up. And in between the last two letters you can see a Yod or a jot. And right there you have jot and tittles together. And Jesus said, "Not one jot or one tittle will ever disappear until everything is fulfilled." And we have twenty-five hundred years of history right here, and they have not disappeared.

And then the spaces you see, you can look there and say, "I can see fifty spaces drawn throughout of it." That was for emphasis, meaning: this is a very important passage saying something about Yahweh, Adonai, Jehovah, so pause here. Incredible what they did do for accuracy. Then they would often use what is called inverted Nuns. I wanted to have a little nun dressed in black and one in white there, but I didn't. But they're called inverted Nuns.

And they have—this was a very important passage so they put little tittles on top of it, and what this emphasized is, is that same phrase or teaching is also in another part of the Torah, and this means it might be even better understood in another part. They knew where this other part was, and so it said here, "As you read this, go to the other part and read it together, it might help you to understand." Can you see the care taken for accuracy with this?

And then they would finish seventy-two feet, over one year just to copy it. That's not preparing it, correcting it, anything, just to copy, over one year. I wouldn't have the patience. I stand at a microwave and say, "Hurry up." [laughter] But when they finished, three times they'd go back. I don't know how they did it. You look at that. It looks printed to you. This was all done by hand. A man sitting, had to be sitting alone, doing this.

They would take their counters, they were called counters, I thought it was a forerunner of Sesame Street, and would go back and they would count every single letter, 304,000 letters. And they would mark the center letter, which is Leviticus 11:42. They could tell—now think of this, if they made a mistake in copying where they added or left out one single letter in the entire scroll. No one ever did that with any of their literature, not the Qur'an, not the classics, anything. But they did it for the accuracy of the Word of God.

Then they'd go back as in Leviticus 13:33, and they would indicate that they count every single word. And they knew in every book what was a single letter and a single word, and they knew for the entire Torah what was a single letter and a single word. And three times they'd count every word and make sure they had not left out or added one single word in five books of the Torah, in seventy-two feet. No one ever did that to assure accuracy.

Then you will see some little fine—they faded some—little fine called scribal notes in the margins, there's about seven in the entire scroll. And this is where they say something about the text here, that--careful, there might be on error in this text or something, or be very careful when you read the third word, you can misinterpret it. They were so careful they wanted you to understand it correctly.

Then you'll find some dots. These dots, I have one there, and a couple down there, they're little, tiny dots. And the scribe would make a little dot saying: there could be the need of a correction in this line to the right of the dot. He wasn't absolutely sure, so he never changed anything. They always had to do it exact. And then they'd bring in the professionals, the real professionals, and they would check it back for a thousand years, all different—"Is this the exact letter that should be there?"

But just to double check to make sure of accuracy, they put little dots in the margin. Nobody ever did that with any other literature of antiquity. God said, "Not one jot nor one tittle will pass away." God said it: "I wanted a relationship with you. I created you to have a relationship with you. But it's got to be a right relationship, so I'm going to reveal to you my heart and my mind. I'm going to reveal to you truth about God, about man, about love, about marriage, about sin, about righteousness, about heaven, about hell, everything. But I'm not only going to reveal the truth to you, I'm going to protect it for three thousand years."

So that even now—you think of this next time you open your Scriptures with confidence. Oh, I wish—if I had another hour, I'd have other relics from the New Testament here. I've got some that very few human eyes have ever seen, and manuscripts not seen by two thousand years. And if I had another section of New Testament, it'd even be more incredible than this. But God said, "I want you to be able in the twenty-first century, in 2013, June 23, open your Scriptures and a confidence, 'Thus saith the Lord. It is not been lost.' "

Folks, this is only the third time I've ever done this, or anyone's ever done it: last night, and the first service, and now this is the third time. I hope it's meaningful to you. I hope it helps you. And you'll have twenty to twenty-five minutes at the break to come up look at it, there's magnifying glasses. You can come around this side, the other side. Please, no small children. Only touch the margin.

If you really want to touch it, there's parchments down there that are brand new just made last week, and you can touch those. It took about three weeks to make them, but they just finished it the today before they shipped them overnight to me to have them here. And one is sheep skin, one is calfskin, and you can check those.

But, folks, no one has ever had the gall, and I'm nervous about it, to lay this out in front of a church or any convention, conference, or anything. You go to Israel, you can't even get close to it. They're behind glass, everything. But I remember, you see all of this that I shared with you here I learned before I ever became a Christian, because I set out to write my first book to refute Christianity. And I went and studied all this to show that it was not accurate and correct, and I ended up becoming a Christian.

You go to this book and start on page 69, and it'll blow your mind for about one hundred pages, about what I've talked about here all documented. I can stand here literally for three hours without notes and tell you incredible things how they preserved the truth. It's all documented in here.

And then two other books that just came out. One is 77 Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]About God and the Bible. My son and I took seventy-seven of the most difficult questions that people run from, and we wrote out the answers and documented on an eighth-grade level. You read this, it'll do two things: it'll give you a greater confidence in the Scripture, and it'll give you a greater confidence to use this to pass it on to the next generation.

And then the book that just came out, The Bible Handbook of Difficult Verses. We took 225 Bible verses that Christians think there's no answer for it. That there must be a mistake, there's a conflict, there's a contradiction, whatever, or that makes no sense the interpretation. And we wrote it on the eighth-grade level so pastors can understand it and scholars can [laughter] and scholars. But what it does, you will read this, you'll go, "Oh, my gosh, I never knew that's what the verse really meant."

See, most of you think there's a problem because they misinterpreted it. And when we document what the really meaning of it is, you go, "Oh!" (Ouch) [laughter] I never knew that." And this will help you to have a greater confidence in Scripture, and to help your children and grandkids.

I'm going to be down here for twenty, twenty-five minutes. And you can take photos of it, but if you post a photo on your website or anything, you must put the Lodz Scroll, L-O-D-Z, the Lodz scroll-Josh D. McDowell, that's very important, or do not put it on the Internet, please. Otherwise you can put it on your website, whatever, take photos. And I've tried to lay everything out so you can appreciate it more.

Thank you for allowing me to come to the church and my favorite pastor in the entire world, Skip. I love that guy. He means so much to me and my family. Thank you. God bless.

Closing: What binds us together is devotion to worshiping our heavenly Father, dedication to studying his Word, and determination to proclaim our eternal hope in Jesus Christ.

How Jesus prays for us
John 17
Bill Holdridge
Info
Message Summary
Ever wonder why or how Jesus prays for us and that if we know He does, how should we really be acting and thinking? Our guest speaker Pastor Bill brings out the vital points of prayer teaching how Jesus prays for us. The Apostles and Disciples hear the beautiful words of their master as Jesus speaks to His Father about us. As we hear and read the prayers of Jesus we must never forget that Jesus is full of thoughts of us and He will be praying for those who love him. So, do you want to know what Jesus prays for you?

Acts 18:1-11
Acts 18:1-11
Tom Stipe
Info
Message Summary
Paul was a man who went to the people; he did not wait for the people to come to him. Are you waiting for those to hear you preach or teach or are you willing to go out and bring the gospel to men? Senior Pastor Tom Stipe of Crossroads Church in Denver brings us a vital message from the book of ACTS concerning our approach in preaching the gospel and uses Paul as the example of how a single man brought the gospel to folks in his sphere of influence. Pastor Tom challenges us to not be afraid or have fear when we do preach the gospel. Are you willing to step out and be confronted by the public, friends or loved ones? God did through Jesus, so why not you?

Pastor Dave shares from the book of I Corinthians, Chapter 13, breaking down the elements of love. If there is one thing you can count on concerning love, it is that Love Never Fails. Psalms 46
Don McClure
Info
Message Summary
God tells us to be still and to know that He is God. Do you rest in Him when the storms come, or do you run to the confines of your mind to figure things out? David knew God and the peace and rest that can be found in Him. Pastor Don McClure reminds us of a different world where we should dwell as we grow in our understanding of the things God would have us to do in times of trouble. Psalm 46:10 tells us to be still and know that He is God. Are you too busy to know God on a deep level or do you dwell in the throne room of your Lord and receive His strength for your refuge? God has a plan for you and it can only be for good. Step into His world and know Him.

Does God Speak Today?
Psalms 19
Scott Richards
Info
Message Summary
Does God really speak to us? If so, how does this happen? If it does happened, how do I know what He's saying? These are good questions and a young King David learned the answers to these questions in God's outdoor classroom. God speaks to us in a still small voice and gives us His word to confirm His love for us. You can know that God does speak to us today by becoming His child and reading His word. In these ways we can see how God leads us from glory to glory. So, how about you? Are you tuning in on the right frequency or are you still dialing through the world of stations?

Behavior vs. Bravado
1 John 2:3-11
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
Some questions are hard to ask sometimes, especially if those questions are directed at us. Questions like "Do we really love God?", "How do we know we love God?", and "What does it look like to love God?" can really be tough. Many good men strive to do what is right, but unless we know God and we follow His commandments we do not know the truth. John writes words aimed at helping us understand the free will choice we have to make daily to love God. So, if you really want to understand what it means to have a deep love for God or to know where you stand, just listen to what John has to say to us through the Holy Spirit.

Samson - a life of Compromise
Judges 13-16
Brian Michaels
Info
Message Summary
What does it take to keep a promise or vow? Do we really understand the commitment of keeping our words? In the book of Judges Samson clearly demonstrates that he neither understood nor took seriously the instructions of his parents concerning the keeping of the Nazirite vow. We will see that compromise leads to more compromise and ultimately to our demise. But God is gracious and if we repent and turn from our evil ways God will, as He did with Samson, grant us grace. So, when you sign that paper, say those words, or make that promise…, be sure you understand what it's all about.

As a believer, are you ready to choose between the passing pleasures of sin or staying the course even if you are called to suffer? The way you live your life is a testimony to the internal nature of your convictions. Any way that leads away from the Lord leads to destruction. This world and its destructive lusts will come to an end, but one who is continually doing the will of God has a front row seat to eternity. Where is your seat located, in the aisle of destruction or on the front row or eternity?

The Power of a Resurrected Life
Philippians 3:10
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
What power do you know of that can raise a person from the dead and then give a promise to do the same for you? We all were dead in our sins, but through the resurrection of Christ we now have the re-birth needed to live. Paul writes to the Philippians about the Power of a Resurrected Life as part of the knowledge we need to live a life before those who do not know Jesus. Paul showed us, as Christ did, that to live is to die and to die is to live only through a resurrected life. There is power we can know only if we know the One who bore our sins and gave us eternal life. If you want to know that power, the Apostle Paul has some words for you.

The Children of God pt. 1 - Godly Living
1 John 3:1-9
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
How would you describe the state of your family life? Is it close, comforting, and encouraging? Or is it not quite what you had always hoped for? As Christians, we are part of God's family, the family of all families. We are bathed in His love and have access to all of the benefits of being His children. But if we abandon His invitation to join this family we automatically become members of the family of sin and there simply are no benefits associated with this family. So think about which family portrait you would like to be part of – God's Family Portrait or Sin's Family Portrait.

The Divine Code
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
All of us have read books and some of those books stirred our hearts but did you know that the Bible can stir your heart to know and understand the deep truths of God? In II Timothy we read that all scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, correction, reproof and instruction in righteousness. Why? So that we may know how to dispel false doctrine and equip others to stand in the faith they have been given. What do you think about the word of God and do you believe that all scripture is given by the inspiration of God? Timothy writes to us by the Holy Spirit that we can know and be assured that the word of God is the Word of God…, and that's a fact you can believe and know, so get into the word and live.

All of God's love is for us and in us, so if you really want to know God's love you must abide in Him and He will abide in you. Yes, God is for you and loves you completely, but, will you let Him?

More importantly, some of these opportunities have the possibility of changing the eternal destination of someone close to you. As you begin each day, remember the responsibility you have to seize every opportunity God gives you to make a real difference in someone's life. If you fail to do so, the consequences just might be eternal for a friend or loved one. Join Pastor Raul Ries as he encourages us rise up out of our complacency and make a real impact on the lives of those around us.

The Ministry of Reconciliation
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
Chip Lusko
Info
Message Summary
There are times when life seems full of disappointment, strife, hurt, and severed or damaged relationships. Each person has a choice to make when faced with these types of disappointments, to follow a path of vengeance or to opt for the path of reconciliation. As believers who choose the path of reconciliation, realize that we are not alone as we travel this path. We have the hand of God helping and directing us along the way. Join Pastor Chip Lusko as he delves deeper into this topic of reconciliation and what it truly means to be an ambassador for the King.

A new song for a new season
Psalm 40
Bill Welsh
Info
Message Summary
Ever wonder how much God thinks about you? Do you know the thoughts God has about you and what God wants for you? King David wrote many Psalms and in these Psalms, David expressed the times of His life so we may know the heart of a man that God calls, "a man after God's own heart". As we wait for the Lord and cry out to Him and trust Him, God will bring you up and out of anything you may be facing, so, take heart and be of good cheer for your God is on the move!!!!..., think about it.

Witnesses of the Truth
1 John 5:6-13
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
Have you overcome the world? Do you know how to overcome the world? Is your family strong enough to overcome the world? The Apostle John writes in First John Chapter 5 concerning how we can know that we have overcome the world. But what is it to really do just that? John says, it is our faith in God and in His Son Jesus Christ that overcomes the world. The question here is; do you know who God is and His Son or do you just know of Him? Your family will get you through this life but only Jesus can bring you beyond this world to His Father and all of it by His love, do you want this love or will you turn and trust in your worldly family? Think about it.

A Bridge Of Hope
Mark 9:36-37
K.P. Yohannan
Info
Message Summary
How do you see you're self in the eyes of God, as little children or as one needing to become one? We all have a need to be loved and taken care of and Jesus is able to do that, Jesus told a story that is repeated in three of the four gospels about taking a child in His arms. This story is asking you to be that child and to see others as little children who are seeking a father, the Father. So, are you being taught by the Holy Spirit as a little child or are you too old for that…, think about it.

Praying 101
1 John 5:13-15
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
Do you believe that God hears you or do you just believe God does not want to hear from you? If God hears you do you really believe God will grant what you ask of Him? The Apostle John in 1 John 5, writes to us concerning having confidence that if we ask anything in His name (Jesus) He will hear us. Is that really true? John knows it to be and so can you. God wants you to know that He is available to you anytime and for any reason…, you just have to come and ask. So, as you think about this ask God to show you and you will see that God is able to do all things for you according to His will, but it all start with meeting, asking and believing in Him.

Sin, Death and Idols
1 John 5:16-21
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
Sin affects us all and without the knowledge of God's word we would not know sin and be lost. John writes in chapter 5 concerning sin and how we are to understand sin and its nature. Sin all started with pride in Lucifer and in the disobeying of Eve and Adam but all sin can be dealt with by one simple act…, repentance. Are you in a state of sin or are you in the loving peace and care of Christ? God calls us to be set free from sin and live free. So will you accept God's gift or grace or will you hold onto what you think is right?

Rewind, Remember, Resolve
1 John 5:18-21
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
Abiding in Christ will keep you from the wicked one for God wants us to understand Him and know that we are born of God. Are you born of God? Can you really say, I am His and He is mine? This is the confidence we have in Christ, that Jesus died and rose again by the will of God and in this we who believe are born of God. John writes to us in 1 John 5 concerning who we are in Christ and how we can and do know that we belong to God. So, have you learned that your faith overcomes the world or are you still looking to the things of the world and its wisdom to help you overcome? Know this, God is yours, you only need to ask and receive Christ, will you?

Character in Conflict - When Motives Collide
3 John
Dave Row
Info
Message Summary
How often do you spread the news of someone you know who is walking in Christ that is having a great impact on others to the strengthening of the faith of many? In Third John the elder Apostle gives us two great examples of men who have kept the faith in unselfishness, impacting many to Christ. But John also exposes a man who thinks of himself first instead of bringing Christ to light. These people are selfish, prideful and without wisdom, from these put yourself at distance. Do you spread the faith in humility putting the light on Christ or are you keeping the praise for yourself putting light on you?

Why Redeem the Time?
Ephesians 5:15-17

Message Summary
We often have a pretty good grasp of how fleeting time can be. In this day and age of waxing philosophical, moral relativism, and a church that gives in to the pressures of the world, we need a firm grasp of how and why we must redeem the time. As we consider Ephesians 5:15-17, we'll be reminded that time is short—we need to be wise, walk in the light, use our minds, and understand that God has a plan for our lives.

Eternal Life: The Deepest Yearning of the Human Heart
John 17:1-5
Sean McDowell
Info
Message Summary
There are different ways of knowing. We can know "that," and have an understanding of something; we can know "how," and experience something; and we can know "personally," and have a relationship with someone. In John 17:1-5 we will dissect a portion of Jesus' prayer to His Father, before being handed over to crucifixion. In this passage we learn that Jesus' suffering and death would reveal the glory, or character of His Father, and that through His death and resurrection, we can know God. Knowing God is intimate and personal, and by studying what it is to know God, we'll understand that eternal life comes from being in relationship with the only true God.

Wholehearted Devotion
Mark 14:3-9
Alistair Begg
Info
Message Summary
She did what she could—her gift of costly nard in an alabaster flask was broken and poured out to prepare Jesus for his burial. But the disciples condemned her—scolded her for the extravagant gift. Is that how we view those who are extravagantly sold out to Christ? Through this text, we learn from her sacrifice and Jesus' commendation to the heart of what we do be done in extravagant devotion to God.

Life has its highs and lows. When we are at our lowest, who can we count on to answer the deep, anguished cry of our heart? Who can we call when things become so painful, we can't even believe it's real? David would tell us that there is One who neither slumbers nor sleeps, One who is ready and able to answer our call.

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Leader
Numbers 20:1-13
Neil Ortiz
Info
Message Summary
As a follower of Jesus, how are you representing God? In Numbers 20:1-13, the people contended with Moses and Aaron. They did not trust God and the leadership He appointed. Likewise, Moses and Aaron allowed their anger and frustration to control them. They rebelled against the Lord and misrepresented Him to the people. As we consider this text, we learn that as ambassadors for Christ, we must be gracious and submissive both in our leadership and in our following.

Message Summary
As we celebrate Mother's Day with the wives, daughters, sisters, and mothers all around us, K. P. Yohannan paints a portrait of his mother and the influence that she had, both in her family and in India. We catch just a tiny glimpse of a country with 62 million child laborers suffering on the streets and millions of mothers who have never heard of our Jesus to whom they can take their children. K. P.'s mother would say, "Our greatest privilege is to love people."

How to be a Hero of Faith
Hebrews 11

Message Summary
In Hebrews 11, we read testimonies of men and women who demonstrated extraordinary faith. When God commanded them to do something, they obeyed. From their examples, we learn that in our weaknesses, we are made strong, faith requires courage to face difficulties, and obeying the Lord is about using the faith we have rather than the amount of faith we possess.

Conquest of the Cross
Romans 3:19-26

As believers, we can never outgrow the gospel—when we think we have, we are actually moving backwards. Paul's letter to the Romans was a treatise explaining the good news of Jesus Christ, and the recipients were saints! In this refreshing study, we are reminded about the power and love that was displayed on the cross, and how our Lord Jesus Christ has conquered all!

Your Life: an Epic Fail Compilation or an Epic Feat?
Genesis 37-50

Info
Message Summary
Time and time again, Joseph encountered hardships that were not his doing: harsh treatment, betrayal, false accusation, and apathy. But Joseph was always mindful of God and remained obedient despite the unfairness he met. We learn it was his reverence of God that gave Him peace to get through every situation—and God raised him from a slave to the second in command over all of Egypt. His life seemed to be an epic fail, but as we study his reactions, we see how God turned his life into an epic feat.

A Person Who Is Holy
1 Peter
Raul Ries
Info
Message Summary
Peter called his fellow believers to be holy and reinforced this exhortation with an Old Testament command from the Lord. Today, there are many who walk in darkness—even believers—but as we study 1 Peter 1:15-16, we are reminded to live honorable and holy lives for the Lord. Let's consider what Scripture says about holiness, glean from examples of strong believers who came before us, and learn about the reasons for living a holy life.

Luke 15:11-31

Message Summary
Jesus' parable about the prodigal son is one of the most well-known parables from the Bible. But as we discover who Jesus' specific audience was, we learn that the son's warm welcoming by his father isn't the only—or even main—message Jesus was communicating. In this study of Luke 15:11-32, we learn about three types of relationships with the Father: the rebellious, repentant, and religious.

How To Live The Blessed Life
Bob Shank
Info
Message Summary
As we search the Scriptures to find out God's thoughts about generosity, we discover that we are called to make giving an integral part of our lives. Through two passages from both the Old and New Testament, we see how generosity is a call to obedience from the Lord as well as a demonstration of faith on our part. When we give generously, we become more and more like God as He blesses us, and the world can see that our God is alive and moving.

Message Summary
In Matthew 7:21-29, Jesus told a story about two men who had built duplicate houses, but there was one critical difference: the foundations. Jesus used this story to call out the imposters who claimed to be His followers. In this study, we are reminded that God has a building code for our lives and His Word is our blueprint. Message Summary
When we think of the twelve apostles, we sometimes get the idea that they were an elite, holy group of men who effortlessly followed Jesus. But as we study Matthew 10:1-4, we see that almost the opposite is true. While they did have dedication in following Christ, they didn't have it all together, and they made mistakes along the way. In this message, Pastor Nate Heitzig explains how God used even this ragtag group of men to radically change the world, showing that God wants to take us as we are and transform us so we can also impact the world.

Uprising of Love
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Nate Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
People are constantly finding new causes to rally behind, but we can't change society then expect people to get better. In fact, Jesus claimed the opposite—people must change before society can get better—and He demonstrated that by loving the unlovable and caring for the rejected. Pastor Nate Heitzig challenges us to be part of the uprising of love as he explains what that means and how we can live it out.

Standing In the Fire
1 Thessalonians 1:4-10
Tom Doyle
Info
Message Summary
Christian persecution is at an all-time high globally. But that’s not the whole story. A new Jesus movement is erupting out of the Middle East, and persecuted believers are leading the way. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the book of Daniel, these new believers are fearless. Jesus is right there, standing with them, and the fiery furnace of today is the growing threat of Islamic terrorism.

Spring Cleaning
Romans 12:1-2
Chip Lusko
Info
Message Summary
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). “If we truly want God to reveal Himself to us and His purpose and plan for our lives, we need to be empty of our own agenda and set aside our own preconceived ideas. God will never force His way into our lives. His desire is to transform our hearts and renew our minds to reflect His character and wrapped in unselfish love towards one another. He cannot fill us with ‘Him-self’ and His attributes if we are already full of ‘our-self’.” —C.S. Lewis

The Bible is the best-selling, most overlooked and underutilized book of all time. God didn't write it simply as a compilation of bedtime stories and coffee mug promises. There Is Room
Luke 7:36-50
Taylor Bronisz
Info
Message Summary
There is room for everyone at the feet of Jesus. When Jesus was eating at the house of Simon the Pharisee, a woman interrupted their dinner. Simon and his guests saw themselves as self-righteously superior to this woman and did not make room for her or truly welcome Jesus into their hearts. The woman, on the other hand, realized her desperate need for forgiveness and life change—and she left with a new identity and renewed future.

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
Revelation 1:12-18
Brian Nixon

A picture can portray an idea as quickly, effectively, and profoundly as the written word. But what did Jesus look like? In the absence of a photograph or true portrait, what do artistic renderings of Jesus communicate? In this message, Pastor Brian Nixon compares earthly portraits of Christ with John's heavenly vision of Christ from the first chapter of Revelation.

Making the Right Decision
Luke 16:19-31
Raul Ries
Info
Message Summary
The body of Christ loves people and wants every person to spend eternity in heaven rather than hell. In this teaching from Luke 16, Pastor Raul Ries invites us to consider the decisions we're making in our lives and ask, What should I be doing in life as I get closer to death? Seeking after God should be the number one priority in our lives, but in order to seek His kingdom we first must be in the kingdom—and that requires us to make a decision for Christ.
