Communion Messages

Communion Messages

Communion is one of the few practices Jesus instituted during His life on earth, directing His disciples to "do this in remembrance of Me" (1 Corinthians 11:24). In these special Communion messages, we're encouraged to keep this commandment of Jesus with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Well, good evening.  How are you all tonight?  The bible says, "This is the day that Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it" and you've all been rejoicing.  We all have, haven't we?  You know the children of Israel would meet outside for a week every year on a feast called the Feast of Tabernacles.  Now, that feast was celebrated by the Jewish nation just last month and typically they would go outside like we are tonight, but they would spend the night in a little boots or lean-tos that were attached to their homes or out in the streets to remind them how God took care of their fathers, their forefathers when they were in the wilderness' wanderings for those 40 years.  And so, God didn't want them to forget what it was like to be outside with the elements and totally depending upon him.

So, it's kind of nice to do this every now and then to meet outside.  We've done it a few times during the year and this may be like the last time we get to do it because it gets cold pretty quickly after this.  But tonight the weather is perfect and so we're here celebrating.  We -- as you know or may not know, this service is also on the radio live throughout the entire state and you could see the cameras that we have.  So, it's being streamed live on the internet all around the world.  It would just be nice to give people who are watching by internet or who are listening by radio a big outside communion under the stars greeting.  Tell them "hi".

It's loud even outside, very good.

Well, we've been studying the bible on Wednesday nights and we are committed as a church to go in through the bible verse by verse.  One verse at a time, you can take these off if you want, these monitors aren't helping.  We're committed to go in through all 31,173 verses of scripture and we're in the book of Genesis and it's our belief that we can expand your knowledge and of truth by expounding God's word verse by verse.  That's what Wednesday nights is all about.  Now we have been as I mentioned studying Genesis and we have taken about 36 weeks now in studying the book of Genesis chapter by chapter and after that Exodus and then Leviticus and then Numbers and then Deuteronomy.  And we're going to cover all 66 books that way.

We've already done it a few times in the history of this church, but we want to really give you the word of God.  We have noticed in the book of Genesis that there are four great moments that the book talks about, or events.  It talks about the formations of the heavens and the Earth, the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, the great flood as God judged the Earth and then finally the fall-out from man's sin upon the Earth and what God did about it.

Genesis is foundational.  It's so foundational that the rest of the bible will quote from the book of Genesis.  It's the most quoted and referred to book in all of the bible.  Even in the New Testament, over 200 times the book of Genesis is mentioned because it's the foundation of everything.  It's the origin of the heavens and the Earth.  It's the origin of mankind.  It's the origin of marriage and the family.  It's the origin of sin.  It's the origin of God's plan to fix in.  It's the origin of the nation of Israel whom God would bring through the Messiah.  So it is absolutely foundational to the rest of the bible.  Also in the book of Genesis, we've come up with the concept, you who have been with us on Wednesday nights, you know it well.  And that's the concept of the covenant.  God makes an agreement or a plan or a pact with people and the covenant that God makes, the covenant is the platform by which God operates in dealing with humanity.

So the first time God made a covenant was with Noah, I'm sorry, with Adam in the Garden of Eden called the Adamic covenant.  The second time was with Noah and that's called the Noaic covenant.  And then God made a covenant called the Abrahamic covenant and that would be with whom?  Now you guessed it, Abraham of course.  Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the children of Israel, their progeny.

Now, that covenant that God made with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and the 12 sons involves a couple of things.  Number one, it involves relationship with God, relationship with God.  And as the Lord put it, "I will be their God, and they will be my people."  The second part of the covenant that God made was real-estate.  God promised a land to the Jews as an ever-lasting covenant, so relationship and real-estate are the two big pillars of the promise or covenant that God made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the rest.

We discussed in detail last week what that covenant of the land was all about, as we kind of worked our way through that in the scripture.  God made covenants with people.  Now as time goes on, God knows that His people are going to blow it.  In fact he predicts that they're going to blow it and he predicts that they're going into captivity long before they do even in the book of Deuteronomy, even when he gives the law.  He effectually says, "You're going to sin, you're going to forget me, you're going to blow it.  I'm going to bring you back to another country and then I'll bring you back into the land after you learned your lesson."

We'll fast forward to a prophet named Jeremiah.  Now I've been reading the book of Jeremiah lately in my devotions in the morning, my quiet time.  Jeremiah the prophet made his predictions during four different kings of Judah and he basically said, "What happened to your sister up North, Assyria, in the fall of the Assyrian empire on the nation of Israel is going to happen to you but it'll happen to you by the Babylonians."  The Babylonians are a common, Nebuchadnezzar is a common and he's going to take captives all of the people of Judah.  He's going to destroy this temple.  He's going to destroy this country, because you would not listen to the Lord your God.

So Jeremiah is predicting that and then we get to Chapter 31 where Jeremiah looks far into the future and not only will God bring them back into the land, but God will bring to them a savior and establish another covenant, a new covenant, different than all of the covenants in the past.  And that's found in Jeremiah 31.  Listen as I read it to you.  Don't worry, I'm not going to say, "Turn in your bibles to," because you have no light to refer to it.

This is Jeremiah 31, "Behold, the days are coming" says the LORD, "when I will make new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to leave them out of the land of Egypt.  My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them", says the LORD.  "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days," says the LORD.  "I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.  No more shall every man teach his neighbor and every man his neighbor, saying, 'know the LORD' for they shall all know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest" says the LORD.  "For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."

Now God in that text to scripture promises that He is going to forget, forget.  I want to talk to you briefly about that before we take communion.  I want to talk to you about when God forgets.  Now typically, when we think of forgetting, that's a human attribute.  We're the ones who forget stuff, not God.  I read that scientists say we never really forget anything.  Everything that we see or do or read or hear is placed into our hard drive, our memory.  One scientist says that our brains are like a Swiss army knife.  You know how those big, thick, hunken Swiss army knives, they have knives and saws and spoons and magnifying glass and stereos and everything inside one knife.  And the scientist said that, "Your brain is sort of like that, there are specialized compartments that do special works that serve your mind."

For example did you know that in your brain is a special little compartment or center for facial recognition that when you see a person and you register the face, when you see them again for years and years and years, it's that little center of the brain that is giving you that information.  Well I'm glad that scientist told me that I remember everything but you know, having it in the hard drive is one thing, recall is quite another.  Amen?  Having the Random Access Memory is quite another thing but they say we remember everything.  Yet we do, as people forget.  We forget people's names and sometimes embarrassing if you just met someone and then five minutes later you'll go, "What was their name?"  And you try to pitch forward and maybe listen to somebody else in the conversation who might say the name.  Of course we as Christians, we sort to have a little cap out and we can go, "How are you brother?"  See, that covers all your bases, or sister.  But we can also forget our promises.  We might promise somebody that will do an errand for them on the way home from work or we promise them that we're going to keep an appointment that we have made with them and we forget those appointments.  We forget that promise.

Now we've been studying Genesis and Joseph was imprisoned. While he was in prison, he met two other guys who were in jail.  One was the chief butler and one was the chief baker who worked for Pharaoh in Egypt and both of them had a dream and they told them both to Joseph, and the chief butler said, "Here is my dream.  In my dream I saw a vine growing up that had three branches and the three branches blossomed to clusters of grapes grew on it.  And I was holding in my hand the cup of Pharaoh and I pressed the grapes and the juice into Pharaoh's cup and then I handed the cup and placed it into Pharaoh's hand."

And Joseph said to him, "The dream is this, the three branches are three days.  In three days, Pharaoh is going to lift up your head and restore you to your position and you will once again serve the Pharaoh."  But then Joseph said to him, "But when it is well with you, remember me.  I'm in jail, you're getting out of jail, when it is well with you, remember me."  Well did he remember Joseph?  No, he said, "Yeah no problem dude, I'll tell the Pharaoh, it'll be the first thing I do."  He gets out, a couple of years later, "Oh yes, I almost forgot."  No, you did forget.  We can easily forget promises.

For some people it's even more tragic.  They forget that they stood next to a spouse on a certain day and said, "I will love you until death do us part.  I make a pledge and a covenant to you and to God and to all these witnesses, that for better or worse, richer for poorer, sickness and in health, love and to cherish you all my life."  But so often, couples forget that they made that promise and we could not only forget our promises and not only forget names, sometimes we forget God.  How easy is it to go through the day and get so busy with the day and with the world and with the activities and on the secular world and values around us, that we forget that it's God who gave us breath, that we worship Him.  We forget that we were saved from our sins.

Now Jesus knows that we have that tendency to forget.  That's why he said, "Take these elements and do it often and when you do it, do it in remembrance of me.  I don't ever want you to forget what I did for you on the cross and so you will this often in remembrance of me," but what about God?  There is something that God says even He forgets.  Now that sounds a bit almost wrong, it's a bit unnerving.  It sounds irreverent because somebody will say, "God is omniscient." And He is, God knows everything and He does.  I John Chapter 2, "God knows all things."  So when we talk about God forgetting, first of all God doesn't forget.  He doesn't forget His creation.  He doesn't forget to maintain this wonderful universe that He has given as we were having the call to worship.

And Nate said, "Look around it where God has us. We're under the stars and the trees and hear the water and it's a beautiful setting."  God never forgets the creation that He made.  The Bible says concerning Jesus, "That in Him all things consist or are held together, He holds it together."  He lavishes the earth with sunshine and lavishes the earth with rainfall.  He opens the doors of heaven, so to speak and lets the sun out in the morning and parks it inside in the evening.

When in reality we're going around the sun but we used to even say, sunrise and sunset when that really isn't true exactly.  But it's God who's keeping that all going.  Now if we can see the stars tonight above you, realize that you live in the Milky Way Galaxy, that is 10,000 light years thick by about a 100,000 light years in diameter at its longest point.  And I've told you before what that means.  If you could get a contraption that took you 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light, if you were going that fast, you could go from one end of your galaxy to the other in 100,000 years.

There are a hundred billion stars in that galaxy but scientists tell us there are billions and billions of galaxies beyond the one that we are considering the Milky Way.  It's God who never forgets that.  Everything consists and everything holds together so He doesn't forget what He made.  Secondly, God doesn't forget His children.  I love that promise of Jesus on the Sermon on the Mount when He said, "If God your Father can so clothe the grass of the field which today is and tomorrow if it's thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you, oh you of little faith?"

If God does indeed take care of His universe and maintain it, God will never forget His children.  He knows the very hairs of your head, the Bible says and how many you lost today when you brushed in the morning.  God knows the Bible says, "Even when one's sparrow falls and hits the ground."  The other day, a bird hit our back window and I'd never like it when a bird does that.  I'm always hoping the bird can recover and didn't break a wing.  Well, the bird was floundering and my dog was trying to get it and I tried to keep him from it.  And yet the bird didn't recover and through the night, my dog got the bird.

But God knew that he would.  Jesus said, "Every bird, every sparrow that hits the ground, the Father is aware of that."  And He counts the hairs on your head.  God never forgets His children.  Listen to this beautiful promise; this is Isaiah 49, "Can a woman forget her nursing child?"  The answer would be?  No.  And not have compassion on the son of her womb?  Again the answer is?  No.  "Surely though they may forget, yet I will not forget you."

Even if it were possible for a woman and in some tragic cases we read, of a woman neglecting or forgetting her own child.  God says, "Even if that were to happen, I will never forget you."  It could be that you have forgotten God.  It could be that you're here tonight.  You're here but your mind is elsewhere, it's on business or on a vacation or on owning something or on some pursuit.  I just want you to know that God not only knows you and knows about you, but He will never forget you.

And to the Lord, you're not some number or some face in a crowd, you say, "Well I'm just one of many people here" and when He -- many people in this town and in the world but to the Lord, you're an individual.  It could be that you're friends have forgotten you.  Your family has forgotten you.  God says, "I'll never forget you."

Many, many years ago when Napoleon was crossing the Alps in the winter with his troops, he had in his army, drummers who would keep the beat of the people who are marching.  One of those drummer men or drummer boys fell into a deep gorge; it was snowy at the bottom so he didn't get hurt.  He landed in a snow bank.  But he knew that he couldn't get out without help.  So he started beating his drum loud, loud so they could hear above that he had fallen in.  His comrades wanted to help him but Napoleon said, "No, we can't help him.  We have to go on."

And so they kept marching and kept marching and the drummer at the bottom of the gorge heard them pass by and knowing that he would be left there to die, the only thing he could do is play in his drum the march of death.  And he played it.  He played that death march on his drum.  The constant, steady beat of the -- and his soldiers, all of the soldiers in the army, though hardened by war, began to sob almost violently.  Because of their comrade, they knew he would die and they tried to beg Napoleon if they could save him.  He said, "No, we don't have time."  For he was too busy conquering the world than to save one person, not our Christ, not our Jesus.  He'll never, ever, ever leave you or forsake you and He never forgets one who has lost his footing.

One of the best promises in the Bible concerning Jesus, it says, "A bruised reed, He will not break."  And what that means is, He won't crush those who are weak.  Maybe you feel weak tonight.  Do you know God has a special place in His heart for the weak and the broken and the bruised?  He came to heal the broken hearted.  So God doesn't forget His creation.  God doesn't forget His children.  And third, God doesn't forget His promise.

And when I say promise I mean specifically, He promises to save for eternity anyone who will call on Him through His son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  There was a criminal on the cross, actually there were two, and one of them started reviling Jesus and seeing all sorts of horrible things about Christ.  The man on the other side who was also a criminal said, "Don't you fear God?  We deserve this death, this man deserves nothing."  And then he turned to Jesus and he said, "Lord, here it is.  Remember me.  Remember me when you come into your kingdom."  And Jesus gave him a promise that he didn't forget, "Today, you will be with Me in paradise."  When Jesus stepped into paradise, He had a crucified criminal by the hand, the first one that He could bring in, returned to Him at that moment.

So we forget, we've established the fact that God is omniscient and He doesn't forget.  If anybody knows things and doesn't forget, it's God.  So then, what is the one thing that God says in His word that He forgets?  It is your sin.  It is my sin.  He chooses to forget sin.  Now I want your heart to lay hold of that truth tonight.  I want you to just sort of capture this moment under the stars outside, as a Church family.  And know that God has chosen to not remember or to forget your sin and my sin.

Now when we say, "God forgets," we don't mean His ability to remember but rather His choice to remember or not.  See, nothing in God is ever diminished.  It's not like God says, "Oh man.  What happened three, four thousand years ago?  I forgot."  Nothing in God has ever diminished.  So when we say, "God forgets," it's not an accidental act of forgiving.  It's a purposeful choice of not remembering.  And you know why, God says He forgets?  Because Jesus Christ did such a good job of washing away the stain of your sin that there's no mark left.  There's no evidence left.  There's no stain left.

There's nothing left to remind God of your sin because Jesus did a once and for all work of washing the stain of sin away.  Because He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our inequity and the chastisement of our peace was upon Him.  So that tonight there's nothing to remind God of your past sins.  And that's why we remember.  We remember that God chose to forget.  That's what we're doing here.  Clara Barton was the founder, years ago of the Red Cross, the American Red Cross.  As a leader, she had people speak against her and speak rumors about her.

And there was one old friend in particular that said some pretty nasty things about her but she never brought it up.  She acted as if it never happened.  One close friend said, "Don't you remember that?  Don't you remember that?"  And Clara Barton said, "Nope, I distinctly remember forgetting it."  "God, don't you remember when I did that and I sure remember when I did that".  And God will say, "No, I distinctly remember forgetting it."  We forget.  God never forgets.  But God has chosen not to remember the sins against you and me because Jesus did such a great job that the stain doesn't remain, it's gone.

And so we take communion and we take at an absolute confidence and joy and thanksgiving that we're counted among those that Jesus saved.  Some who are sitting here tonight, have never released your life to Jesus.  You've been holding back.  You've been holding onto it.  You've come to Church, maybe you'll come occasionally.  It's not really that important to you, for some maybe it is a little more important because when you come, you feel good.  But it's still could be that in your own life, in the depth of your own heart, you have never truly released your life and asked Jesus personally to be your Savior and to wash your sin away.  And He wants to do that.

And though this is a communion service for the body, I believe there are some here tonight that are about to enter the Body of Christ by salvation.  So I'm going to ask the band to come up and they're going to sing a song and as they sing this song, even before we pass out the elements and we're going to send you back to your seats after you do this.  But if you have never personalized salvation, if you've never said yes to Jesus Christ at a personal level, I'm going to ask you to do it tonight, here under the stars, in the court yard, in front of God's people and more importantly in the presence of God Himself.

This is a holy moment.  I want Christians everywhere to be praying.  It could be also that you made a commitment in Christ some years ago.  You felt so good the first week or two weeks or month, then it just didn't feel the same.  And because it didn't feel the same, you decided not to walk in the same way after the Lord.  And it could be that you need to come back to the Lord tonight.  We want to welcome you back home if that's the case tonight, either way as we sing this final song and let's all stand for just a moment and make it easy for people to move about.  If you're anywhere seated on my right or left, or in the back, in front of me or directly behind me, get up out of your seat, as we sing this song and gather right up in front, where Pastor Neil is, and I'm going to lead you in a prayer to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.

As we sing you come, we'll wait for you but you come.  Don't hold back another day.  Don't wait for next week or next month, you come.  I see a whole lot of people.  And what is so encouraging, is I see a lot of young people.  A lot of teenagers and younger, young and old, or I should say young and younger, all different ages, male and female, all with the same need.

Now those of you who have gathered, I'm so glad that you came out from where you were sitting and are standing here.  And I'll tell you why.  So often when Jesus call people, He call people publicly.  And we called you publicly, because there's something I believe that happens inside of a person when he or she makes a public stand for Christ.

There's something that cements who you are and what you're about to do a little bit deeper than just staying anonymous in the crowd.  This is the night you'll remember the rest of your life.  On this day, you will become a child of God.  I'd like to lead you in a prayer and I'd like you to say this prayer out loud after me from your heart.  Say it and mean it.  This is you giving your life to Jesus and asking Him to forgive you.

Let's pray together.  Lord I give you my life.  I know that I am a sinner.  Please forgive me.  I believe that Jesus died, that He shed His blood on the cross and that He rose again from the dead.  I turn from my sin.  I leave it behind and I turn to you Jesus, as my dear savior, as the master of my life.  Fill me with your Holy Spirit.  Help me to live for you everyday.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

Why is it that we always want to take the simple things and make a big deal out of them? Why do we act as if it all is too complex to understand? The Apostle Paul wanted believers to keep it simple and he exhorts us to do so. The Gospel is pure and straight forward, so let's not complicate it. Keep it fresh and strong and just say it like it is. Think about it.

Reconciled and Rejoicing!
2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
To forgive sin takes one who is Holy and pure and acceptable to God and that person is Jesus Christ. For Jesus took our sin and died for us all because God loves us. Are you still holding onto sin? Are you tired and afraid of letting it go? Many are in the same boat, full of sins that will sink. But you don't have to keep it anymore, your sins can and will be forgiven if you come and ask the one who can make that happen…, Jesus Christ. Look up and open your heart to the one who really loves you and accept the free gift of life. Are you ready or are you still trying to work it out…, let go and allow God to take you as you are and your sins and guilt will be changed into everlasting life…, what are you waiting for?

Message Summary
The Bible declares, "It is good to give thanks to the Lord." Researchers agree that a lifestyle of thanksgiving offers physical, emotional and relational benefits. As we examine God's word, we discover that offering thanks and praise to God in every circumstance is His will for us. We'll be reminded of God's goodness toward us even in very difficult times as we consider Jesus sacrifice and His gift of eternal life.
