Night That Changed Everything, The

The Upper Room Discourse was Jesus' final message to His closest followers before He went to the cross. After washing their feet and giving them the example of how to love and serve one another, He taught what it really means to be His disciples. Pastor Skip Heitzig teaches how we can learn to face situations similar to those encountered by Jesus' disciples.

A Night To Remember
John 13:1-5
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
We begin today a new series I am calling: The Night That Changed Everything! It is essentially a series of studies on the longest message Jesus ever gave—the Upper Room Discourse (John 13-17). It was a message given to His closest followers the night before He suffered and was crucified. In this series, we will learn the keys to discipleship—what it means to follow Jesus once we've come to Him. We begin by peering at a most unusual act—the washing of feet.

Love On Its Knees
John 13:6-17
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Love is often the response we have whenever we face a crisis and rightfully so. During such times we check priorities and rally behind them. But when the crisis is past and life normalizes such humble affection has a way of retreating. It must not! A Christian should be a Christian in both bad and good times. Selfishness can never be the way of a follower of Christ. Jesus proved that. The very night that would lead him to the cross found him on his knees serving others.

Betrayal
John 13:18-30
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
One of the worst words in our language is betray. It means to deliver up. While Jesus was about to deliver from sin and its destruction, Judas was about to deliver up the Savior. If you have ever felt betrayed by someone who has delivered you up to be fired, divorced, or slandered, then this study will have special application to you.

Discipleship: A Whole New Way of Life
John 13:31-35
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Conversion without discipleship? Nothing could have been further from Jesus' mind. When Jesus called these 12 men, He called them to a full time commitment—a surrender of their time and energy-a whole new way of life. On this final night that Jesus spent with these closest followers, He informs them of more new changes that will be a part of this life of discipleship.

Upper Room Q and A
John 13:36-38
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
An old Persian proverb reads, "It is harder to ask a sensible question than to supply a sensible answer." Many times our questions to God are reactive—based on a sort of knee-jerk reaction to painful circumstances in our lives. We must remember that whenever we ask God questions, we must hang around to get His answers. The apostle Peter asks Jesus two questions and is given two outstanding answers.

God's Prescription for Heart Trouble
John 14:1-6
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Heart disease is one of this country's leading killers. But the Bible often speaks of the heart as being the seat of our mind, emotions, and will—the inner sanctum of life. It is here that our thoughts are forged, our decisions are made and our fears are conquered or not conquered. There are plenty of reasons to be troubled these days, but there are more reasons (and better ones) not to be.

How Can I Know God
John 14:7-11
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
What a thought—that a mere human being can know the transcendent, omnipotent Creator! The agnostic asserts this as being an impossible task. The atheist insists that the very idea of such a pursuit is arrogant and purely metaphysical. But that's one of the reasons Jesus came—to reveal God's character and nature—perfectly! In the upper room, on the last night that Jesus spent with His disciples, the subject of knowing God by knowing Jesus becomes pivotal.

Privileges of God's Employees
John 14:12-14
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Within every company there are benefits for its employees. These may include overtime pay, health insurance, and sick pay, among others. Paul wrote, "We then, as workers together with Him (NLT calls us "God's partners") also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain" (2 Corinthians 6:1). God has called each of us to a high and lofty task—to be his representatives here on earth by spreading His message to as many as possible. What has He provided for us in terms of resources?

Four Part Harmony
John 14:15-18
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
There is nothing sweeter to listen to than well-trained voices blended together in musical harmony. Hearing mellifluous notes stacked together in the same key brings a sense of satisfaction to the ear. Spiritual harmony is much the same: When believers blend with each member of the triune Godhead there is an alignment that results in a deep sense of gratification fulfillment. And what is the note we are to sing in this spiritual song? It is the note of loving obedience.

Promises, Promises!
John 14:19-24
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Dwight Moody once noted that, "God never made a promise that was too good to be true." He makes them and then He keeps them. Anyone can make a promise but it's the keeping of them that reinforces both credibility and integrity. On this last night that Jesus spent with His apostles, when sorrow and confusion was filling their minds, these promises would sustain them in the days, months, and years ahead.

Behold Your Awesome God
John 14:25-26
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Some theological roads look to be mysterious and unfathomable, so we only gaze at them from a distance. But today, we walk down the road called Trinity. You'll never be able to completely unravel the fullness of this subject, but you can understand the triune God better and thus relate to God more fully. Jesus freely spoke of His Father, Himself, and the Holy Spirit and so we should freely study it and seek to understand Him. In two short verses we will get a mighty dose of our almighty God.

Peace Where You'd Least Expect It
John 14:27-31
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Lately, it seems that in our country fear, anxiety, and distress have virtually become part of our national culture. Odd isn't it? That though we have such abundance in this country, most aren't experiencing abundant life-especially as Jesus described it. You could write on countless American gravestones the epitaph: "Hurried, Worried, Buried." What a sad way to live! Today we consider a promise Jesus made of peace—it's not a promise given to everyone; but it is a promise given to those who know Him.

Branches Healthy and Holy - Part 1
John 15:1-8
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
On this threshold of the New Year, we pause to consider where we've been and where we're going. Recent events of terrorism and war have made us re-evaluate once again what it means to be Americans. But we must go deeper and evaluate what it means to be a Christian. Jesus gives to His disciples a beautiful word picture of what it means to follow Him which causes us to self-evaluate and ask, "Am I really a follower?"

Branches Healthy and Holy - Part 2
John 15:1-11
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
This is the second part of the two-part message on discipleship. As we grow older in life, we normally grow up or become mature. In our spiritual lives, we become spiritually mature. The Bible calls it becoming fruitful. The spiritual fruit is the indication that we are truly connected to Jesus Christ. But there are other indications as well; these we will consider today. The connection we have with God through Jesus the Vine will be evidenced by pruning, praying, and pleasure. Let's consider these verses once again:

Jesus Our Friend
John 15:13-17
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
We can get through almost anything in life if we have good friends with which to share our sorrow and divide our grief. A Chinese word for friend is peng-yu, and has a much fuller meaning than its English translation. It means, "one who brings completion and sums up beauty." The ancient Hebrews saw true friendship as an ideal to pursue and a blessing to enjoy. In these final moments with His disciples, Jesus' terms for their relationship are the most tender. They were friends!

Where In the World Do You Stand?
John 15:18-25
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Today we consider the flipside to being one of Jesus' friends. Whenever you ally yourself and make friends with anyone, you incur some enemies also. It's no different with being Jesus' friend. Some, who don't like Jesus, won't like us—and we discover there are quite a few who don't! It all goes to show that while we are in the world we are not of the world.

Two Thirds is Not Enough
John 15:26-16:15
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
We love God the Father who has created us; we love God the Son who has redeemed us, but what about the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the "quiet One" who is active in the life of every believer but is sometimes not acknowledged as being vital. Who exactly is He? What does He do? What does He want from us? Oswald Chambers once noted that, "The Holy Spirit cannot be located as a guest in a house. He invades everything!" Today we consider his personality and His role in our lives.

The World's Prosecuting Attorney
John 16:5-11
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
The world of unbelievers is essentially on trial and the court is in session already. The Holy Spirit, as the Prosecutor, has brought charges against this world for its crimes. Since the greatest gift God ever gave to the world was His one and only Son (John 3:16), it stands to reason that the greatest sin one can commit is to reject the Son (John 16:9). How does the Holy Spirit both sentence all the world as prosecutor and yet lead people away from judgment? And what role do we play in all of this?

A Buoy of Joy in a Sea of Sorrow
John 16:16-22
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
It was the flamboyant baseball legend-turned-preacher Billy Sunday who remarked, "If you have no joy in your religion, there's a leak in your Christianity somewhere!" That's not to say that life is all laughs and smiles. Hardly! Jesus anticipated His followers' deep sorrow. He predicted it. But He also assured them that their experience of sadness would be eclipsed by a greater experience of joy-the kind that would be lasting.

Antidote to a Boring Prayer Life
John 16:23-30
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
A seven-year-old boy went to Sunday school and after the prayer time remarked, "Can we hurry up? This is boring!" The little girl to his left gave him a sharp jab with her bony elbow and rebuked him, saying, "Shut up! It's supposed to be boring!" Unfortunately most folks think that about spiritual things and especially about prayer. That's a far cry from how Jesus described it and how the early church practiced it. Let’s take a glimpse.

Eavesdropping on Holy Ground
John 17
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Imagine if you could sit and listen to Jesus praying to His Father—talk about standing on holy ground! Nothing could be more sacred! In this prayer (which comprises all of John 17) we get some comforting and powerful insights into inter-Trinitarian communication as the Son speaks directly to the Father about the disciples and the future of the church. This prayer is unique for five reasons:

Gifts That Keep On Giving
John 17:1-5
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Richard Braunstein said, "It is possible to give without loving, but it is impossible to love without giving." Part God's nature is that He shows His love by His generous gifts. "For God so loved the world that He gave" (John 3:16). Here, in the opening breaths of Jesus' own prayer to His Father, He makes a request—a gift from His Father for glory—and He acknowledges three other gifts—two given to the Son by the Father and one given by the Son to us.

Pulling Back the Veil On Discipleship
John 17:6-10
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Okay, which is it? Did God choose me or did I choose God? Well, it all depends on your vantage point—if you're looking at it from the divine point of view or a human one. I suppose you can sit around, scratch your forehead, and pull your hair out trying to ponder such imponderables, or you can sigh happily and say with a grateful heart, "I'm elated that He chose me!" You should ask yourself another question while you're at it—What am I going to do about it now?

In the World: Missionaries or Monasteries?
John 17:11-19
Skip Heitzig
Info
Message Summary
Everyone wants to "leave his mark" on the world—to be remembered or at least noticed for some contribution he/she made to society. Jesus wants us to do that as well. In fact, He prays for it to be so. He wants us to make an imprint on the footpath of life so that people will say, "Hey! Look! God's kids walked here!" We can do that neither by isolating ourselves nor by insulating ourselves from the world. The only way to do it is by infusing ourselves into this world.
