The Real Homeland Security

by Skip Heitzig |
Recently, we passed the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States. Our country is still not secure from the threat of terrorism, but the old saying, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance," also applies to our spiritual lives. We are not secure from the threat of attack by the enemy of our souls. As 1 Peter 5:8 says, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

Satan likes to employ confusion and deception--making the world to think they can earn salvation by good works, or making Christians doubt their salvation. But there is only one way to salvation, through Jesus Christ. And God wants you to be certain that you are eternally secure (see 1 John 5:13).

Our real homeland security worry should be about the security of our homes, our families, our marriages. The rise in divorce, the attempt to redefine marriage, and the spread of adultery and sexual crimes and perversions are only a few examples of the dangers we face. Further, we are becoming increasingly conformed to this world, in opposition to scripture (see Romans 12:2). We allow the internet and cable TV to steal our souls and those of our children. More and more of us feel that abortion and living together outside marriage are acceptable.

From the outside, there is the vocal, aggressive attack on the Christian church in our culture. An increasing number of books openly oppose Christianity, and a growing number of people believe radical Christianity is just as dangerous as radical Islam. And on top of all this is the shaky international situation.

Here's what our godly response should be:

1. Be informed. We need to read our Bible, and know it.
2. Be equipped. We need to find strategies to protect ourselves and to promote Jesus Christ in this world, to be "salt and light."
3. Be engaged. We are all in this fight. In fact, we're on the front lines. As British statesman Edmund Burke said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

So as we remember the attacks on our country, let's remember that as Christians we are always under spiritual attack. But let's also remember at all times that we're on the winning side. "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57).

In His strong love,
