What You're Worth

by Skip Heitzig |
The world typically values people based on their outward beauty, personal wealth, or accomplishments. But God looks at us through a very different lens.

First Peter 1:18-19 tells us, "You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot."

The key word of that passage is redeemed. In the first century, to redeem meant to set a slave or prisoner of war free by paying a price. The fact that money was spent in the transaction inferred that the slave or prisoner of war was highly valued. In the same way, God redeemed you because you are precious and valuable to Him.

As believers, we know that God loves and values us, but so many of us still have a hard time really believing it. The reason we struggle with it is because His love is so foreign to us--it's based on Him and His character, not on us or what we do. In other words, you're valuable simply because you are loved by the God of the universe.

And what did you cost? What was God willing to pay to get you to heaven? "The precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." When God purchased your soul, He didn't go for the lowest bid; He paid the highest price--the very life blood of the Son of God. That's how valuable you are. God was willing to pay everything, and Jesus was willing to go through it.

Now, why is Jesus' blood so precious? Because His blood is the only antidote to the world's sin virus. First John 1 says, "The blood of Jesus Christ [God's] Son cleanses us from all sin" (v. 7). That's how you get rid of sin stains--the precious blood of Christ. And that's the price He paid.

So when you find yourself anguishing over, Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Am I handsome enough? stop and remember that you are valuable and precious in the eyes of God. You are worth everything to Him, and He gave everything to redeem you and purchase you to Himself.

In His strong love,
